The UTS Black Belt Certification is the culmination of the full Black Belt program. The program is a hands-on, self-driven and coached certification process for those who are keen to have formal recognition of their ability to devise and execute a more complex improvement project within an organisation.

About this course

Following successful completion of the theory-based Black Belt short course, candidates looking to put their learnings into practice and receive formal recognition of their professional undertakings and achievements, are eligible to enrol in our Black Belt Certification program.

The program is an entirely self-driven and hands-on experience that focuses on coaching eligible participants through a real-time improvement project, in which they are tasked to work within the scope of their current employer or organisation.

Embracing the idea that improvement work is a continuum of complexity – from ‘Just Do It’ scenarios, to rapid improvement projects – participants in the Black Belt Certification program are inevitably focused on undertaking projects at the more complex end of the scale. This will involve a fuller application of the methodology, including developing a full improvement plan, thoroughly documenting all the cycles and phases, practicing effective change management, and so on.

Lean Six Sigma program structure

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification is the penultimate step in a progressive program of lean six sigma training leading to Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt. Each program must be completed before progressing onto the next as follows:

Additional course information

Course outline

In addition to the requirements (detailed below), undertaking our Black Belt Certification program requires you to devise and execute an improvement project to UTS requirements. This plan must be conducted with the approval from a sponsor within your workplace. Upon acceptance into the program, you will receive detailed information on assessment criteria and the certification process.

From here, you will be assigned a Master Black Belt coach, who will provide support and feedback as you work through each stage of your improvement project in real time. You will be required to submit the relevant documentation and evidence of progress at each stage of the project to your coach, for feedback.

At the end of the project, you are to submit a completed report with your project portfolio, which will be used for certification assessment. Satisfactory completion of all requirements will reward you with the Black Belt Certification.

The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification program fee includes:

  • Written feedback on the sponsor-approved and sponsor-signed improvement plan proposal
  • Four, one-hour coaching sessions conducted by telephone, web-chat or face-to-face, with the timing and method dependent on mutual availability, and

It is possible to complete the certification process within two to three months and it must be completed within a maximum timeframe of 12 months.
