About this course

This course starts with definitions of packet switched networks, broadband access, email and worldwide web operation – the fundamentals of telecoms technology. Next, you’ll look at ethernet-based local area networks and internet architectures, including an exploration of router functionality and how TCP/IP protocols underpin the internet.

No telecoms course would be complete without a review of broadband services, including the national broadband network (NBN), so you’ll spend some time exploring the NBN business model and services. Before the course ends, you’ll also get a taste of mobile network technologies – an overview of 4G mobile voice and data networks and an introduction to 5G.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to explain the following key concepts to a peer:

  • How packet switching underpins the internet
  • Fixed and wireless networks and implications of network "virtualisation"
  • Traditional ADSL 2+ broadband, NBN Fibre to the Node/Curb (FTTN/FTTC), HFC and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
  • The NBN business model
  • Capabilities of 4G LTE and 5G networks.
