Have a question?

In this practical course, you’ll learn cutting-edge techniques for analysing social data in order to understand, describe and make predictions about people’s behaviours and needs.

About this microcredential

The complexity of society can make it difficult to understand how groups of people will behave. Economics, crowd effects, pandemics, targeted advertising, the propagation of memes and misinformation all point to the importance of being able to make predictions about how people will respond to limited information.

In this microcredential, participants will explore how human behaviour can be understood through data and social analytics, drawing on such topics as the quantified self, filter bubbles and nudging. Participants will be given an overview of additional data science methods, such as social network analysis and sentiment analysis that can be useful to gain insights about people for their own data investigation in an area of their choice.

Key benefits of this microcredential

This microcredential has been designed to equip participants with:

  • An understanding of key issues and methods in describing and predicting human behaviour through analysis of data, including how new forms of data can inform our understanding, and a range of data analytic techniques to enable that
  • A range of practical tools to assist developing this understanding, and applying it to a business case
  • An understanding of output from tools used by data analysts / data scientists in support of understanding people.

This microcredential aligns with the 2 credit point subject, Data Literacy: Using Data to Understand People (68029), in the Master of Professional Practice (C04404) and the Master of Technology (C04406). This microcredential may also qualify as recognition of prior learning at this and other institutions.

Who should do this microcredential?

This course is suitable for anyone wishing to use data to understand people’s behaviour and make decisions or recommendations based on the data analysis. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Managers
  • Analysts.

There is no assumed background knowledge required to undertake this course.

Course outline

This microcredential has been developed in collaboration with the Faculty of Science and the Connected Intelligence Centre. It is delivered online and is largely self-paced, designed to fit in with participant’s busy schedules.

The following content will be covered during this course:

Module 1: Understanding your problem

  • Identify the domain you want to explore with data
  • Compare the kinds of problems that can be solved by understanding people
  • Describe the problem you want to solve and build an argument for why it is needed.

Module 2: Finding data about people

  • Identify relevant data to solve questions in your domain
  • Find open data or generate your own datasets to understand people
  • Understand and prepare your datasets for further analysis.

Module 3: Analysing your data

  • Identify the best technique to answer specific questions, using your data
  • Identify different techniques to analyse the data, as well as additional tools you can use to understand other people's data
  • Solve questions about your specific domain using your data
  • Validate additional considerations.

Module 4: Insights beyond data

  • Recognise common errors that researchers and analysts make when analysing and interpreting data
  • Consider contextual data to strengthen identification of meaningful information.
  • Recognise qualitative approaches that can help to understand people's data
  • Understand ethical implications.

Course delivery

The course is delivered online. Participants will be required to complete self-paced learning supported by formative assessment tasks, in order to develop their skills and knowledge. Participants will then apply these skills to a final, assessed project.

Course learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this microcredential participants should be able to:

  • Identify and define relevant questions that can be used to gain evidence about people’s habits or behaviours
  • Identify or create their own datasets containing people’s data
  • Understand and prepare a dataset for further analysis in searching of useful evidence about people’ behaviours or habits
  • Identify different analytical approaches and how they can be used to gain evidence about people’s data. (e.g., systems network architecture or SNA, can be used to identify influencers in my networks)
  • Consider essential ethical aspects when using people’s data (e.g., anonymity to protect people).

Assessment

Assessment task (a): Formative quizzes (15%)

Participants will complete three short quizzes throughout the online modules to test their understanding of the course concepts.

Assessment task (b): Data investigation proposal (25%)

This task requires participants to showcase a 3-minute mini presentation, addressing:

  • Their domain of investigation
  • What questions they have in their domain
  • Selection and evaluation of a dataset to explore these questions.

This presentation will give participants the opportunity to receive formative feedback (peer and instructor) to guide the development of their final report.

Assessment task (c): Data investigation report (60%)

Participants will be required to submit a 1000-word report, including the following:

  • Overview of their domain and selection of question(s) in their domain
  • Brief description of the chosen dataset and its cleaning process
  • Explanations of the analysis technique(s) used
  • Presentation of the findings obtained after the analysis and how they can be used to solve questions in their domains
  • Additional considerations or suggestions for techniques to use in further analysis, that can improve decision making processes
  • Brief explanation of ethical implications when using people’s data.

Assessment criteria:

  • The analysis is required to be oriented by the defined question(s)
  • The application of at least one analytical technique to solve a question(s) is used
  • There is a synthesises of findings and description of further analysis that could enrich the decision-making processes in their domains
  • The ethical implications of data collection and analysis have been assessed.
