You’ll explore the fundamental concepts of structured thinking and planning and the biases that impede effective decision making, gaining the skills to construct structured narratives that provide a blueprint for success.

Course outline

This course is structured into five modules. Each module includes self-study materials and facilitated online sessions

  • Module 1 – The nature of and need for structured thinking
  • Module 2 – The biases that affect problem solving and strategic communication
  • Module 3 – Tools for structured analysis and problem solving in the context of complex problems
  • Module 4 – Constructing structured narrative and implementation roadmap
  • Module 5 – Structured thinking and problem solving in the context of wicked problems

  3. Assess situations to use structured thinking when solving complex issues

Assessment

Assessment task 1: Individual project plan (Individual) - Weighting: 40%
Assessment task: Students submit a project plan outlining the challenge they work on, the type of data they gather, a plan for how they analyse the data, and a project management plan with key milestones.

  • Length: up to 15 slides

Assessment Criteria:

  • Demonstrate skills to define complex challenges
  • Develop research and project management skills

Assessment task 2: Individual project (Individual) - Weighting: 60%

Assessment task: Students complete a project focused on analysing and developing a plan for addressing a complex challenge within their organizational environment. They submit a structured report outlining analysis, insights, and supporting evidence. The report is designed as a structured and persuasive pitch and presented via a short video.

  • Length: up to 30 slides, 3 min recorded video pitch

Assessment Criteria:

  • Demonstrates skills in structured analysis
  • Develops realistic and achievable course of action
  • Information is communicated effectively for specific audience

In order to pass this course, participants must complete both assessment tasks and achieve an overall mark of 50 and above (minimum Pass). The weighting for each assessment task is indicated in brackets.
