Have a question?

Have you ever been in a training session, presentation or seminar, and found that you can’t seem to concentrate no matter how hard you try? Or your mind wanders off as you get distracted by an image included in the presenter’s slides? Instructional resources can help the learning process – or hinder it. With this learning design microcredential from UTS Open, you’ll gain the skills to create impactful educational activities, objects and environments that transform the learner experience.

The course provided a good overview of existing and emerging digital tools, and demonstrated how learning design draws on principles of UX. The insights and skills I gained were immediately applicable in my work projects, so it was a worthwhile experience.

Anushka Fowler, Curriculum Designer

Course outline

This microcredential is structured into six modules and is delivered over six weeks. Each module features self-study materials, interactive activities such as quizzes, multimedia presentations, short video and audio recordings and peer critiques, as well as facilitated, live online sessions. These weekly, optional live online sessions provide an opportunity to apply the content to practical and authentic examples drawn from the workplace, with the course culminating in an industry led expression session.

The six modules are:

Communication and Learning Design

  • Discover the different theories about how we communicate, the mechanisms and processes of communication and how it relates to learning design.

Media and Learning Design

  • Explore the different ways of thinking about media and its role in learning design and instruction. Draw on theories from fields outside instructional design and education, including communications and psychology.

Text and Learning Design

  • Examine some of the key principles behind using text and images effectively in learning design. Learn how to apply these principles to create effective communications online.

Casting and Learning Design

  • Learn the principles of effective video design, when to use (and when not to use) a video and how to create your own educational video.

Interactivity and Learning Design

  • Explore some basic and some more complicated examples of interactivity and the tools used to create them. Examine how interactive objects can be used to meet learning outcomes and create your own sample interactive object.

Expression session

  • Engage in a practical workshop hosted by an industry expert that combines the ideas, concepts and tools developed throughout the course and puts them into practice.

Course delivery

  • This microcredential includes weekly, live, 90-minute optional online sessions facilitated by an expert UTS academic, supporting self-study and online learning activities
