While design thinking has become mainstream as a codified innovation process, many people who have adopted this working method are yet to develop a deeper design mindset. This short course will teach you the nine design mindset attributes developed by UTS researchers. You’ll take a deep dive into three of these attributes (reflexivity, human-centred and make tangible) along with methods to embody these features in your everyday work practices.

About this course

Design innovation practice is becoming commonplace in organisations seeking to build innovation capability. However, current efforts are often falling short in changing the way people work, because of an over-emphasis on design methods and less emphasis on building a design innovation mindset. Understanding and adopting the deeper attributes of a design mindset is the missing link to unlocking true innovation.

Through processes with design and innovation leaders, UTS researchers have articulated a set of nine design innovation mindset attributes, which form the theoretical foundation for learning. This practical short course includes a self-assessment process of your existing mindset in the workplace and provides tools to help you think, feel and emote in a more design-focused way.

Course structure

This short course runs over five weeks, comprised of a mix of self-directed online learning and scheduled online tutorials. Participants should allow for five hours of learning per week, including three, one and a half hour tutorials over the course. Content is delivered via online readings, surveys, individual activities and online group discussions.

Topics include:

  • Self-assessment survey to understand your existing mindset in the workplace
  • An overview of the nine mindset attributes (with a deep dive  into three) and examples of these mindsets being applied in practice
  • mindsets being applied in practice
  • Activities and tools to reflect and build upon design innovation mindsets
  • Development of action plans to implement mindsets in the workplace.

Learning outcomes

This course is designed to enhance and augment existing design-led innovation programs and practices. It is expected to equip participants to:

  • Understand the attributes that make up a design innovation mindset
  • Understand how the concepts of design innovation methods and mindsets relate
  • Become aware of their own mindset in relation to design innovation and identify areas to focus development efforts
  • Establish tangible actions to build design innovation mindsets in the workplace
  • Identify how team and organisational contexts influence individual mindsets
  • Identify how to support others to foster a design innovation mindset.
