Designed for professionals with some experience in data visualisation, this microcredential introduces advanced techniques to visualise varied and complex data sets. Explore the challenges of complex data sets and evaluate visualisation approaches and interactive visualisations for a variety of stakeholders and viewers.

About this microcredential

In this microcredential, participants will develop the ability to visualise data sets using more complex and sophisticated techniques.  Data sets that include time-series, textual and spatio-temporal data are explored, and appropriate visualisation methods are developed, with an emphasis on making the data coherent and legible for particular users. Through practical work, the ways that data visualisations can be made interactive and the implications that interactivity has for visualisation designers are considered.

Successful completion of the microcredential will enable participants to begin applying interactive data visualisation techniques in their work or study, and to develop skills and qualifications on the pathway to become data visualisation designers or visual data analysts.

This microcredential may qualify for recognition of prior learning at this and other institutions.

This microcredential is suitable for professionals from a wide range of sectors and backgrounds who have some formal or informal experience or training in data visualisation, equivalent to the learning outcomes of the Data Visualisation Foundations microcredential.

Course outline

In this microcredential, you will meet and work with a dedicated course facilitator who will support your learning and engagement with teaching resources designed by the lead academic and team of experts from the Faculty of Engineering and IT.

This microcredential is structured into four modules. Each module comprises self-study materials and facilitated online sessions. The modules and key topics covered are: 

  • Module 1 - Chart-based visualisations of complex data types
  • Module 2 - Hierarchical data visualisations & high-dimensional visualisation techniques
  • Module 3 - Interactive data visualisations and user-centred design
  • Module 4 - Visualising changing data and comparing data sets.

Each week (during weeks 1 to 8) you will participate in an online session where you will have the chance to apply what you've learned, ask questions and hear from other participants who are taking the course with you. The workshops are led by the course facilitator.

Weeks nine and ten are planned to give you time to complete the final assignment, with support and scheduled Q&A sessions provided.

Course delivery

This microcredential includes weekly, live, one-hour online tutorials and one-hour weekly Q&A sessions facilitated by an expert UTS academic, supporting self-study and online learning activities.

Case studies of real-world applications illustrate applications of key tools and techniques. The workshop sessions focus on hands-on activities and examples. Regular formative quizzes throughout the microcredential will allow participants to gauge their progress.   

Tutorials will be scheduled for one-hour sessions every Wednesday evening, and live Q&A sessions every Friday evening. Final dates and times for live sessions will be confirmed with registered participants prior to the course starting. Note: recordings of all live sessions will be made available for reference.

Course learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this microcredential you will be able to apply interactive data visualisation techniques.

Assessment

The graded assessment task comprises an individually written assessment to create an interactive data visualisation of a dataset that includes a range of complex data types.

Given a dataset containing a range of data types, participants are required to develop an effective data visualisation that successfully conveys key insights.  Participants will use a range of interactive data visualisation techniques to ensure users are able to comprehend, navigate and effectively explore the dataset.

  • Course participants are expected to demonstrate some formal or informal experience or training in data visualisation, equivalent to the learning outcomes of the Data Visualisation Foundations microcredential
  • To complete this online course, you will need a personal computer with reliable internet access, web conferencing capability and an operating system with a web browser compatible with the Canvas LMS. You will need to be able to run a currently-supported version of Python.
